To be clear I urgently need to get access back to this account: So trying to log into my Mendeley account using the ScienceDirect account login brings me to my NEW Mendeley account which is totally empty. I checked my Science Direct account and found out that (Surprise!) it is linked to my gmail account. One forum solution suggestion was to use my ScienceDirect account to log into Mendeley. I have set up a NEW account in Mendeley with my gmail address to check whether the software works per se (it does) and also to access the forum where I can post this question. After typing the new password I just go back to the same login screen. After several days I still can not access my old Mendeley account (which is linked to my university email address) neither online nor in the desktop app although I have requested multiple password resets, received the email and setup new passwords.
